Japanese-Sourced Cars – What You Need to Know
Some of the cars we sell at Red House Auto are sourced from Japan.
That can raise questions, so this page explains what that actually means, why there’s no added risk, and why it’s actually a very positive thing.
First things first: these are not “Japanese cars”
A Japanese-sourced car simply means:
The car was originally supplied new to the Japanese market.
It does not mean:
- Modified
- Performance or “JDM” cars
- Grey-market vehicles
- Anything unfinished or unusual
The cars we source from Japan are familiar European models – Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Volvo – built by the same manufacturers in the same factories and to the same standards as UK-supplied cars.
Why cars from Japan are often in better condition
Japan has a very different car ownership system to the UK.
Cars are subject to an extremely strict inspection process (called Shaken), and ownership costs increase significantly as vehicles age. Because of this, many owners replace cars earlier than we would in the UK – not because they are worn out, but because they become expensive to keep.
As a result, cars released for export are often:
- Lower mileage for their age
- Very well maintained
- Clean inside and out
- Free from corrosion underneath (no salted winter roads)
This is the main reason we use Japan as a source – condition, not price.
Are they serviced properly?
Yes – often more conservatively than UK cars.
Although servicing is not legally required every year, the inspection system strongly encourages owners to:
- Service cars regularly (often annually)
- Fix anything before it becomes a problem
- Replace parts early rather than “run them on”
- Skipping maintenance makes inspections expensive and inconvenient, so preventative care is the norm. This shows clearly in the mechanical condition of many Japanese-sourced cars.
What changes when the car comes to the UK?
Nothing for you as an owner.
Every Japanese-sourced car we sell is:
- Fully converted to UK specification
- Fully registered with a UK V5C
- Speedometer converted to MPH
- Lighting, radio and emissions compliant
- MOT’d, serviced and warranty-backed
From day one, ownership is exactly the same as a UK-supplied car.
You insure it, service it and drive it in the normal way.
Insurance: Most mainstream insurers are happy to cover Japanese-sourced cars. As with any car, we always recommend getting a quote before purchase.
Servicing: Any competent UK garage can service the car.
Parts: Parts availability is the same as UK cars – engines, gearboxes and running gear are identical.
There is no specialist support required.
Will it affect resale value?
Japanese-sourced cars can sometimes be valued slightly differently to UK-supplied cars on resale. However, they also tend to remain in better condition, which often balances this out in real-world ownership.
Most buyers choosing these cars plan to keep them for several years and value condition and reliability over paperwork history.
Why we are comfortable selling them
We only source cars from Japan when they offer a clear advantage over UK-sourced examples.
If a Japanese-sourced car didn’t:
- Look better
- Drive better
- Present better
- …we simply wouldn’t sell it.
Every car is prepared, inspected and retailed to the same standards as the rest of our stock.
The simple takeaway
A Japanese-sourced car is not a compromise.
In many cases, it is:
- The same car you were already looking for
- In noticeably better condition
- With no difference in day-to-day ownership
If you value condition, care and long-term ownership, Japanese-sourced cars are often an excellent choice.
If you have any specific questions, we’re always happy to talk them through.
